ELA
Essential Question:
What's the best way to get things done?
Overview:
Students will learn that the theme is the main message from a story or situation. They will use a theme chart to help them paraphrase a theme in their own words and look at pictures to determine their importance. They will read realistic stories that are told by a narrator and include dialogue. As they read, they will make predictions to enhance their understanding.
Math
Essential Questions:
1. What are some “real world” situations where you would need to know how to round numbers?
2. What are example of keywords in a word problem that would help you determine which operations to use?
3, Why is it important to be able to recognize and explain arithmetic patterns?
Overview:
Students will learn to use their understanding of place value to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. Students will have a deep understanding of place value and number sense and can explain and reason about the answers they get when they round. They will use tools such as number lines and a hundreds chart to support their work and understanding. Students will be able to use a variety of algorithms and strategies to accurately and efficiently add and subtract within 1000. They will solve two-step word problems using addition and subtraction. They will assess their reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding. Students will be introduced to a variable and how it represents the “unknown value.” Lastly, students will identify arithmetic patterns (including patterns in the addition and multiplication tables), and explain them using the properties of operations.
